NAMED GOLF WORLD PLAYER OF THE WEEK
USCA SOPHOMORE ALL-AMERICAN EARNS
NATIONAL ATTENTION
AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken sophomore Roberto Diaz has been named GolfWorld’s
men’s collegiate “Player of the Week”, it was announced
on Monday. The All-American earns the prestigious national recognition
following his individual win at the 10th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto
Intercollegiate. One award is given out weekly by the publication
across all NCAA divisions.
Overcoming an opening round 76, Diaz fired a second round 65 and
a final round of 67 to capture medalist honors among the Division
I field. It was the second-career title for the Veracruz, Mexico
native who finished two shots ahead of East Carolina’s Andre
Thorsen and three strokes in front of Virginia Tech’s Nick
MacDonald. The five-under-par 65 is the lowest round recorded in
the Peach Belt Conference this year.
In the process, Diaz led the 10th-ranked Pacers to their second-straight
team title, a six-shot win over Virginia Tech. It was the team’s
third-straight Palmetto crown.
On the season, Diaz leads the team and ranks seventh in the PBC
in stroke average at 73.47. Of his seven tournaments, Diaz has six
top 20 finishes including four inside the top 10. Since the spring
season began in February, Diaz has a 72.60 scoring average.
USC Aiken is competing in the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Georgia
College & State in Eatonton, Ga. this Monday and Tuesday. The
Pacers won the event last year.
